CYBERJAYA, 3rd April 2013 - Multimedia University (MMU) today launched its Graduate Institute of Engineering (GIE) with the aim of transforming the university into one of Malaysia’s and the region’s top engineering institutes of higher learning. The GIE was launched by the Chairman of Telekom Malaysia and Multimedia University, Dato’ Sri Dr. Halim Shafie.
In conjunction with the launch of GIE, the university also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SENKO Advanced Components (Australia) Pty Ltd, a telecommunications market leader based in Melbourne within the Australian state of Victoria, to facilitate knowledge transfer between both parties.

This provision of training by MMU is critical as the telecommunications sector within the Asia-Pacific region has been reported to be facing severe manpower shortage by 2015. The MoU aims for MMU to nurture a sizable number of postgraduate professionals to cater for a market estimated to be in the region of 58 million customers throughout Asia-Pacific.
President of Multimedia University, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Muhamad Rasat Muhamad, said that he was very happy that a company as influential as SENKO has recognized MMU’s capability in providing courses of high international standards.

“MMU is the premier university established to support of ICT and ICT-related industries in Malaysia. Hence, this collaboration with SENKO further elevates MMU’s value proposition to students, researchers and industry as a whole,” he further said, adding that the university also anticipates higher postgraduate enrolment from Australia, New Zealand and Middle Eastern countries.

Prof. Rasat added that the large number of potential trainees would be a massive boost for MMU’s commercialization efforts. “It would not only bring in revenue for the university but would also strengthen the MMU brand in an organic way and pave the way for future industry collaborations,” he said. “Furthermore, this MoU reaffirms that MMU is the industry-preferred university, regardless of our fields of expertise.”

Representing MMU at the Signing Ceremony of the MoU was Director of GIE MMU, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tan Ching Seong, while SENKO was represented by its Asia Pacific Managing Director, Mr Fouad Jaffer. The MoU was witnessed by the Victorian Government Commissioner to Malaysia and South East Asia, Mr Tim Dillon.

Mr Dillon said that SENKO has been collaborating with the Victorian State Government for the past two decades and is heartened that this “MoU brings to life the spirit of Melbourne where SENKO is based.”

“In a world that is fast becoming borderless, the cross-cultural exchange of ideas is important for sustainable industry growth and for innovation to continue to thrive,” said Mr Dillon, adding that Melbourne is today Australia’s economic powerhouse and hub of innovation and technology.

The state of Victoria leads Australia’s technology industry with 28% of Australia’s national revenue. Last year, the state posted annual revenue of A$27 billion or RM88 billion, and one of its key strengths its strong skills base.

SENKO, meanwhile, is world renowned for its expertise in fibre optics and boasts one of the industry’s largest product portfolios given the company’s strong 60-year track record.

For MMU, which has been recognized as a Top 200 Asian University, this MoU is proof that its quality engineering programmes, as well as its output in research and innovation is recognized not only a national level, but a regional level.
